Purpose and Goals

• As part of the fulfillment of Meals on Wheels OC’s broader mission, Friendly Callers connect with socially isolated seniors by phone and offer warmth and understanding to make life more meaningful.
• To promote independence and help restore feelings of self-worth and dignity to homebound seniors.
• By helping to keep seniors safe in their homes for as long as possible, this avoids premature long-term placement in a nursing home.
• Friendly Callers also help identify the unmet needs of these seniors, so that Meals on Wheels OC may assist them either through their existing case management services and/or additional resources.

Who You Will be Calling

• Homebound seniors receiving Meals on Wheels, aged 60 or older who are physically separated from others and/or confined to their homes. All seniors have an assigned Case Manager.

Volunteer Commitment

• We ask that you commit to calling at least ten seniors per month, however, it is greatly appreciated if you are able to do more. You will be provided with a list of people to call each month.
• Calls should take 5 minutes to 15 minutes to complete, on average.
• You will need to complete a Wellness Check Form for each senior you call which will need to be returned to the Volunteer Dept. on a monthly basis.
• Once you have completed the initial ten calls, you can let us know if you would like to receive another list of seniors to call.
