ORGANIZATION: NMDP

Purpose:

This role supports the Charlotte Be The Match Walk+Run Local Organizing Committee. The mission of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) is to provide local support in the fundraising and promotion of the Be The MatchWalk+Run event. It is important for each market to have a strong LOC to help broaden the reach of the event. This internship provides the opportunity to experience first-hand the many facets of operating a nationally templated series fundraising event within the Charlotte market.

Home-based office

Charlotte, North Carolina

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with Charlotte Walk+Run event operations including: data entry, list development, Local Organizing Committee meetings, and other efforts based on the direction provided by the Development Manager.
  • Communicate with past/former Walk+Run team captains to encourage their team’s participation and fundraising for 2017 event.
  • Assist with the event sponsorship program, primarily through ensuring the fulfillment of sponsorship benefits: acknowledging gifts, updating websites and collateral with sponsor logos, providing information to sponsors for their own internal company campaigns.
  • Research additional potential sponsors and in-kind donations.
  • Under the direction and guidance of the Development Manager, recruit new participant teams for the 2017 event and encourage team fundraising utilizing Be The Match Walk+Run participant team fundraising tools.
  • Act as Secretary for all Local Organizing Committee meetings and send out meeting notes to all members within 2-3 business days post-committee meeting date.
  • Charlotte Walk+Run Kick-off meeting-coordinate this community engagement event.
  • May fulfill a LOC Committee Chair role in the absence of another volunteer.

Length ofAppointment:

Up to 6 months

Time Commitment:

June 2017 - September 2017

120 hour minimum. Flexible working hours with some evening and weekend commitments.

Unpaid

Qualifications and Requirements:

Must complete a background check.

Must be enrolled in an institute of higher learning.

Self-motivated, strong interest in nonprofit work and belief in community services, strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work independently and as a member of a team. Must be willing to work from a home based office environment using a Be The Match issued laptop. Comfortable using office tools like Microsoft Office. Lifting boxes and supplies may be required as part of preparing for an event or promotional opportunity.

Benefits Provided:

Intern will receive training and work under the direction of the Development Manager. Interns can expect to develop their time management skills, writing and communication skills, and gain mobile office skills proficiency. Interns will also gain knowledge of fundraising and event logistics.

About Be The Match (r) Walk+Run

  • Be The Match Walk+Run is a fundraising event that helps patients with blood cancers like leukemia find a marrow donor and receive a life-saving transplant.
  • Every four minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer. It can happen to anyone at any time. But so can a cure - a marrow transplant. The cure for blood cancer is in the hands of ordinary people.
  • Most of us won’t have a marrow donor in our family and Be The Match matches volunteer marrow donors with patients who need them.
  • 5K, 1K, and Tot Trot.
  • The Be The Match Walk+Run raises funds to:
    • Add more volunteer potential marrow donors to Be The Match Registry(r)
      giving more patients hope for a cure
    • Help patients with uninsured treatment costs
    • Support continued marrow transplant research
