Would you enjoy being on a Cooking Team once a month? Your team (typically 2-6 people) would make dinner one night a month for the St. Vincent Haven, our shelter for homeless men. A "cook 'n gab" session is a rewarding way to spend time together, and from a spiritual perspective, it’s a way to put faith into practice. Our volunteers not only provide home-cooked meals, but they serve with respect and dignity. Dinner is at 5:30 pm. Or you could cook a breakfast or lunch one Sat. or Sun. a month. We'll work around your schedules to find a day that works. If you prefer to work less frequently, we also have openings for the "5th" weeks, which only happen 3 or 4 times a year, and for occasional "subs" to cover vacations or illness. You can join a team, or create your own. How about a group of friends, church family, or workmates? Or your own family? Teens and younger children love to help cook. They can also help serve with an appropriate adult-child ratio. We are starting a mothers/daughters team, and a parent /teen team. We welcome your suggestions for new teams. How about a singles' team? Or a couples' "night-out" team?
The shelter is on Wilson St. (next to the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Shop), but you can cook wherever you like and carry in the food. Most of our volunteers prepare the food off-site and deliver and serve at the Haven at 5:30 pm. However, there is also an opportunity to teach cooking to help the men be more self-sufficient when they get housing, so let us know if that interests you.
You can plan on feeding about 30-35 residents and volunteers when the shelter is full. Some teams create their menus based on what is available in the Haven's pantry. (They may need to supplement for any missing ingredients.) Other teams prefer to donate the food.

About the Haven
St. Vincent Haven is a 26-bed emergency and transitional shelter program for males 18 and older who are homeless from all over Licking County. Our goal is to move our residents from homelessness to self-sufficiency and their own housing. To form a Cooking Team, to join an existing team, or for more information, please call 740-975-9606 (Judith Waite Allee), or email: svh@svdphaven.org. Check our website - www.svdphaven.org.
