ORGANIZATION: Habitat for Humanity Seattle-King & Kittitas Counties

Want to help a family become a homeowner? Homeownership can help break the cycle of poverty cycle and help families become independent and self-sufficient. Children of homeowners are 300% more likely to graduate from college! Our Family Support Partners work one on one with the families and individuals in our Habitat programs to coach them through the application process. They help keep the family on track with their required classes and volunteer hours as well as the other parts of the process. The Support Partners are the main liaison between the family and the Habitat staff as they work their way towards buying their new home from us. This role is usually done as a combination of in person, email, and phone contact with the family. The process for a family can take up to a year and a half, so it’s a longer term position.

Responsibilities:

  1. Help keep the family on track with their paperwork, classes, and volunteer hours.
  2. Help the family communicate with the Habitat staff as they go through the program.
  3. Answer questions the family might have about Habitat policies and procedures.

Training and Benefits: This is a great way to learn about how Habitat works, from behind the scenes. We have special training sessions for our Support Partners. You’ll have the personal experience of helping a family into a better future. Our Family Support Partners are also the ones who literally get to hand over the keys to the family at the dedication of their new home. It is the most touching moment in all of the work we do! You will get valuable experience with one of the most admired nonprofits in the world and know you are supporting affordable housing right here in your community. We’ll even throw in a Habitat T-shirt!

Time Commitment: This role can take a few hours a week for up to a year and a half. Some families need more support than others. The Family Support Partners are expected to attend the ceremony when the family gets their keys, which is definitely the highlight of this volunteer role.
