To teach and empower people and communities to increase their health, well being, and self-reliance resilience by growing food for themselves and others organically and sustainably. Produce from our Garden of Grace is given to Open Heart Kitchen and local food pantries to feed the needy. Fertile GroundWorks champions locally grown food and facilitates the creation and sustainable operation of community, school and employee gardens.
Fertile GroundWorks envisions a holistic framework to nurture and enliven gardening’s role in the good health and well being of individuals, families and communities.
This framework permeates our programs and projects which champion, encourage and empower local food production in its many forms and venues. Volunteers are given the opportunity learn gardening skills, grow nutritious food share the the harvest with those in need. We currently have 3 main programs.
1. To grow food for the needy in our local area. Our fresh, highly nutritious produce is delivered to Open Heart Kitchen and local food pantries twice per week. Our volunteers are encouraged to start their own gardens at home and to share what they grow with their neighbors, food pantries and Open Heart Kitchen.
2. To teach and empower local residents to grow food organically and sustainably at their homes through lectures, hands-on volunteer training, and online resources.
3. To teach and empower local organizations such as businesses, faith-based groups, and schools to start and/or maintain gardens at their locations, emphasizing organic and sustainable gardening practices.
