If you 've never been to Bitter Creek, this is a great chance to see the rugged and gorgeous backcountry in this closed-to-the-public national wildlife refuge, set aside as critical habitat for the endangered California Condor.
Habitat Works has been working in several areas to open wildlife corridors for the free movement of large and small game animals throughout their historic range. The reestablishment of Tule elk, wing-nut deer, pronghorn and their kind is essential for the long-term survival of condors, who eat large animal carrion as their natural food source.
On this project, we will be modifying barbed wire fencing by replacing its top wire with smooth, so when wildlife jumps over, they don't snag or get caught on the fence. That helps increase their saftety and freedom of movement on the refuge.
We'll stay over at the field headquarters, which offers showers, kitchen, sofas and beds, as well as a milky-way evening if you prefer to sleep out. Any vehicle can make this trip, though ride shares are a great way to conserve resources and reduce the carbon footprint.
