The expansive Cuyama River, near the Dick Smith Wilderness will be full of riparian wonder; wide, but with little water this time of year. We'll make base camp Saturday morning (optional), then head out day hiking along the river bed looking for invasive tamarisk plants. When found, we'll treat the bottom few inches of bark with herbicide, and move on to the next one.
It's easy work in a relatively flat area without a trail. We'll head back in the late afternoon to enjoy a delish community feast and camp out under the starry night sky (optional).
The second day, we'll enjoy and excursion hike in the morning before working a few hours, heading out in the early afternoon for an early arrival home. This a great trip if you like to hike while removing invasive tamarisk from this special riparian habitat.
Bring your Spirit of Adventure and basic camping gear!
Habitat Works Volunteers have been removing tamarisk on over 307 miles of watershed since 2003.

Description
Habitat Works hosts single-day habitat restoration projects, weekend campouts and backpacking trips in Southern California's precious National Forests, private preserves and State and National Parks. Volunteers learn about our own local ecology, native flora and fauna and the challenges they face, and have the hands-on opportunity to improve conditions in Southern California wildlife habitat.
