East End House

East End House has served under-resourced members of the East Cambridge community for over 140 years. We use a holistic approach to provide a variety of resources to support local families such as childcare, senior citizen programming, an emergency food pantry, and parenting education. Senior and elderly citizens are an essential part of the East Cambridge community and East End House is committed to creating a space for them and supporting their needs. In that vein, the Sunrise Club was created as a venue for senior members of the community can come together to decrease social isolation, foster healthy lifestyles, and enrich their lives with fun programming.

Volunteer Role:

The Sunrise Clubs meets every Monday and Wednesdays from 10am-12pm. A volunteer’s main role is to be an engaging presence in the room, hang out with seniors, talk and listening to them, and generally be a positive presence in the room. Volunteers arrive at 9:30am to help set up the community room for the seniors, putting out padded chairs, brewing coffee, and preparing any needed materials for the day’s activities. Each month the seniors have a calendar of activities, which include an outing to lunch or a field trip, a birthday celebration, bingo, in addition to other creative and engaging programming!

Mission Statement

East End House is a not-for-profit, multi-service community center and social service agency with an on-going commitment to a diverse population, providing programs and services to strengthen family and community. East End House is the center of community life, a safe haven welcoming, linking, and collaborating with individuals of all ages, their families, businesses, and community institutions to create innovative programs in pursuit of excellence on a sound fiscal basis.

Description

Originally established in 1875, East End House is one of Greater Boston's earliest settlement houses and community centers. One hundred and twenty-nine years ago, it was a vital resource for struggling or newly immigrated individuals and families. Today it is a dynamic, multi-service community center, focused on improving self-sufficiency, providing emergency aid, and making referrals to other agencies when necessary. Consistent throughout its history is this agency's dedication to providing essential services by responding to current community needs with programs, classes, informational resources, and activities. Well-baby clinics at the turn of the century, New Deal Programs during the Great Depression, multilingual energy audits for lower-income families in the seventies, a new facility completed in 1993 - East End House has evolved with its community, ever-mindful of the development and self-determination of those it serves.
