Contribute to the qualify of life provided by the VA Health Care System through volunteer jobs provided at the local VA Health Care Facility.


BIRMINGHAM (Middle Chapter), Shelby County (Middle Chapter)


  • Enhance the Veteran’s experience by providing direct comfort, support, advocacy and reassurance to the Veteran during examinations, procedures or other care that may cause anxiety.
  • Functions as an adjunct/supplement to the clinical team and contributes to creating an environment that supports patient satisfaction and the delivery of care by focusing on the Veteran’s psychological well-being.
Time Commitment:
  • Miminum 4 hours per week with at least 100 hours of service

  • Has broad health care experience and knowledge of medical terminology
  • Good customer service and effective oral communication
  • Demonstrated professional manner


  • Works with local VAVS Representative/Deputy; VAVS Program Manager; Job specific supervisor; other volunteers and patients
Length of Appointment:
  • 4 hours a week minimum and at least 100 hours of service. Length of appointment can be ongoing.
Development Opportunities:
  • Will work with and alongside Red Cross staff, volunteers, and VA staff and patients.
