The Friends of Eastern Cemetery Volunteers
Come be a part preserving yesterday for tomorrow.

As part of the Mayor's Give A Day Week of Service, we invite you to help us clean up Eastern Cemetery on Sunday, April 23, 2017 from 10am to 4pm. You can set your own hours within this time frame if you would like to join us.

Eastern Cemetery located at 641 Baxter Avenue has been a part of the Louisville Community since 1854. The cemetery was abandoned in the 1980s when proof of widespread grave abuse was discovered. For more than two decades, Eastern sat untouched and uncared for. Headstones crumbled as the grounds became overgrown and were used for illegal dumping and vandalism.

In 2013 our volunteer group, Friends of Eastern Cemetery, armed with trash bags and a single mower, began picking up the grounds, doing our best to clean up over two decades of neglect and are still striving to create a self-sustainable model for continued upkeep of this historic cemetery.

On Sunday, April 23rd, we would love for you to join us for an exciting volunteer day at Eastern Cemetery. You will spend the day learning about the rich history of Eastern Cemetery and its residents; working in a serene, beautiful environment; mowing grass; weed eating; and cleaning veteran headstones. We might even have the opportunity to reset some of the veteran headstones that have been reclaimed by the earth over time. We recommend that you bring gloves and wear sturdy, closed toed shoes. We will provide all other supplies.

Mission Statement

A 501(c)(3) non-profit, the Friends of Eastern Cemetery aims to protect and preserve Eastern Cemetery, located on Baxter Avenue in the Highlands.

Description

Friends of Eastern Cemetery is an organized volunteer effort to restore and maintain Eastern Cemetery which is located in the heart of Louisville, Kentucky. The history of Eastern Cemetery is not one without controversy. The property was abandoned in the late 1980’s when proof of widespread grave abuse was discovered. After that, for more than two decades, the property sat untouched . Headstones crumbled as the grounds became overgrown and the pristine environment diminished as people used the grounds for illegal dumping. Friends of Eastern Cemetery was formed to change that.

Our ultimate goal is to create a self-sustainable model for continued upkeep of this historic property. Since there is no active caretaker, we have happily taken over that role. This public effort is carried out with hard work and a great sense of community. That means that grounds are once again kept clean and maintained to the best of our abilities. There is still much to do and we are nowhere close to our desired goal, but we continually inch toward it and appreciate every bit of help we receive.
