Participate in a variety of projects at the Reed Education Center at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) in Edgewater, MD. SERC is located on nearly 3,000 acres of land on the Rhode River on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay. SERC scientists investigate our changing world by studying issues of global importance including sea level rise, climate change endangered plants ,vulnerable ecosystems, and pollution. Through SERC's education program, you can help us share our science with the public.

There are many ongoing opportunities to lead activities for K-8 students, perform trail maintenance, lead canoe excursions, lead guided hikes, help us maintain our aquariums and more!

We will provide all of the background information and training you need. If you have specific expertise that you would like to contribute, please let us know and we will try to utilize your skill set.

To work with school programs, volunteers must be at least 18 years old and pass a background check.

Description

The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) is looking for people who are interested in participating in environmental science research. Volunteer opportunities can accommodate a variety of interests including working in the laboratory or the field on topics ranging from colonial archaeology to forest biodiversity to water quality. We are also looking for volunteers to assist in our education department and assist with activities like leading field trips and canoe excursions, helping in classrooms, and maintaining aquariums and gardens. No specific experience is required and all appropriate training will be provided.
