Program/Department Overview:
Jewish Vocational Services’ Adult Diploma Program offers students of all ages a chance to earn a real high school diploma from Boston Public Schools. Our students are diverse, and have diverse academic skills and needs. They range in age from 20 to 84. Many came to the United States from other countries. Just like any other high school scholars, students take classes in math, English, social studies, and science. They write essays, complete assignments, and study for tests. Unlike regular high schools students, these students juggle work and family to complete their coursework. The Adult Diploma Program offers small class sizes, one-on-one tutoring, and education and career advising to help students fully benefit from their high school experience. Our program is small, with only 7 full-time staff members. Volunteers are essential to the high level of support we provide to our students. In our program, volunteers tutor students and proofread their work. Without that tutoring, our students would not be able to fully benefit from their classes. Volunteers are in the classroom with us as well, as classroom aides. Volunteers serve as role models for our students, setting a good example of professional dress, speech, and demeanor.
