ORGANIZATION: Heritage Farmstead Museum

We need green thumbs in our kitchen garden! Our kitchen garden is representative of what would have been seen from 1891-1929 in this area. This garden is used as an exhibit which helps school children understand where their food comes from, and historically how farmers grew food for their families. Our volunteers plant and care for the the garden, and use natural, traditional pest control methods. Heritage Farmstead is a wonderful backdrop for gardening, where you can enjoy the unique beauty of the historic property, and most importantly, be a part of a wonderful group of our garden volunteers where you will make friends with like-minded individuals.

The volunteers in our kitchen garden plant fruits, vegetables, and herbs, as well as see to the maintenance of the garden. This position is year round and you will work under the supervision of our lead garden volunteer.

Volunteer shifts take place on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from 7:30-9:30 AM, with occasional Saturday opportunities.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Heritage Farmstead Museum is to collect, preserve, and interpret late 19th century Blackland Prairie history while making use of the authentically restored Farrell-Wilson Farmstead, a designated historic site.

Description

The Heritage Farmstead Association works to preserve, teach, and demonstrate the past to more than 30,000 visitors annually. Transformed into a living museum of agricultural history, this 4.5 acre historic farm complex has been awarded designation by the Plano Landmark Association, a State of Texas Historical marker, and a listing in the National Register of Historic Places. The museum has received accreditation from the prestigious American Association of Museums.

Heritage Farmstead Museum relies on volunteers for many of its programs, events, and day to day operations. We have a wonderful team of volunteers who we train in their volunteer positions until they feel comfortable. We have parties, and opportunities to engage with other volunteers and staff.

Come join our team and help preserve history for generations to come!
