ORGANIZATION: Run-Walk Events

Hi. My name is Darren Van Soye and I am the chairman of Run-Walk Events (RWE). RWE non-profit corporation for the public benefit, headquartered in Southern California. Our mission is to create world-class events that raise money in support of childhood fitness. Last year, we raised over $55,000 for charity.

Run-Walk Events was originally created to host the Race Across the USA. We ran a marathon a day from Huntington Beach, CA all the way to the White House in Washington DC 4 1/2 months later. A dozen runners left Huntington Beach... seven of us actually made it the entire 3,080 miles across the country. To be sure, this was an epic journey. (The state of Texas alone took nearly a month to cross!) Along the way, we visited over 5,000 students in 29 schools to challenge and encourage them around getting active and eating right.

Our board is looking for another board member with the experience to take Run-Walk Events to the next level. Using the Race Across the USA as our launchpad, we are planning a series of running events that will begin on January 1, 2017 in Anaheim. The following year, we plan to add San Diego and Santa Barbara. Every event we hold will be a fundraiser in support of a local childhood fitness organization.

As a board member, you will be helping to guide and support our team as we produce new fundraising events. We are specifically looking for someone with a track record of successful business endeavors. The field of that experience is not important. Successful board members are well-connected, good communicators, are organized, and can inspire others.

What is the time commitment? At a minimum, you would be expected to participate in the board meetings in person or via laptop. They typically last an hour and occur six times a year. During these meetings, we review and approve financials and also discuss ideas for upcoming events. All you need to participate is a laptop and a solid Internet connection. If this sounds like a good fit, please get in touch so we can answer your questions.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to spark a physical activity revolution across the United States by creating low-cost, family-friendly running and walking events that appeal to all ages, especially today's youth.

Description

We are a mission-driven organization who aims to have large-scale, positive health outcomes in the communities in which we operate. If some path will result in a greater impact in terms of the number of participants and/or the amount of good we do, we will favor this course of action. This includes our events or the amount of money we raise for our charity partner. If forced to choose, we weigh the impact of children higher than adults.

Our organization is volunteer run. While we do pay the Race Director a small stipend to maintain continuity, nearly everyone else is an unpaid volunteer. We seek to create a win-win environment where staff volunteers and interns can learn and grow in skills and experience with a time commitment as little as 2-4 hours/week. We specifically look for folks who want to give back, those who believe in our cause and those that with benefit in other ways outside of monetary compensation. We will write a recommendation letter after 90 days of satisfactory work.

Our events are built around the local community. The name of the event includes the name of the city where it is held, and we hire a local and race director. We partner with local businesses to finance our event. We also partner with a local charity for race-day volunteers and to receive funds raised.
