healing trauma through fun and support..

The YMCA is looking for adult volunteer mentors to be positive role models for children (ages 5-19). With just 4 - 8 hours a month, you can make a difference in the life of a child who is affected by challenges of foster care, the juvenile justice system or other emotional disabilities. Mentors help young boys and girls living all over Montgomery County by offering support, guidance, friendship, encouragement, and learning opportunities.

Volunteer mentors are required to attend informational and training sessions. Once matched with a mentee, mentors are encouraged to attend continuing education workshops and program events.

About YMCA Youth & Family Services

Location:

9800 Hastings Dr, Silver Spring, MD 20901, US

Mission Statement

YMCA Mentoring is a one-on-one community-based mentoring program which matches caring adults with children and youth between the ages of 5 -15 referred to us by either Montgomery County Child Welfare Services (the large majority), or therapists and school counselors. Our mission is to engage mentees in activities that foster social, educational, and emotional growth.

Description

Our volunteer mentors are caring and capable adults, 21 yrs or older, committed to making an important difference in the lives of children who are experiencing significant challenges. V olunteer mentors make a basic commitment of 4-8 hours per month for a minimum of one year and they meet with mentees on a regular basis, preferably weekly, either in the evening or on weekends. In addition to the one-on-one mentoring sessions, mentors and mentees are encouraged to participate in program-sponsored group activities. We make same-gender matches and use common interests/goals between mentors and mentees to make the matches.

Our application process includes: a volunteer application, personal interview, fingerprinting and background check including child protective clearance and sexual offender registry check. Volunteer mentors are also required to attend an informational session and training as part of the application process. Throughout the year, we provide continuing education, support, and supervision.
