Thank you for your interest in volunteering as a mentor with Youth Policy Institute! We have several programs that require volunteers. In all of our programs, volunteers will be working as a mentor to our youth, ages 16-24. All of the youth have been matched with a case manager and employee of YPI. To help be able to achieve the highest level of success, we want to find mentors who will give our youth support throughout the program. A mentor is a positive role model who will be available during the journey. The youth we work with in all of our programs are at-risk inner city youth. Each program has a slightly different practice, but all focus on helping the child succeed, whether it is in school or in a career.
We are sure that you will have a rewarding experience working with our youth. We will match you with someone who shares your personal interests and who you will assist with your educational, career, and personal goals.
Below are the descriptions of the two programs followed by our interest form where you have the opportunity to identify the program(s) in which you are most interested!
Pathways to Justice Careers - If you are in an Emergency Career field, this one is perfect for you! We want our volunteers to assist in a one-to-one or small group setting, to inspire our youth into a career pathway into emergency services, public safety and law fields. We ask our volunteers to meet with youth on a weekly basis for one hour during a 6 month commitment. Volunteers will meet at the Helen Bernstein High School Complex in Hollywood.
Face Forward - Volunteers for this program will work with youth in a small group setting. The purpose of this program is to support youth when their educational attainment offers them college and career options. The program is also intended to reduce recidivism. We ask our volunteers to meet with our youth twice in person and have weekly check-ins during a 6 month commitment. Volunteers will have the opportunity to chose our Pico-Union or Hollywood Youth Center locations.
