ORGANIZATION: Behind the Book

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading. Through our innovative programs, accomplished authors lead workshops in high-needs classrooms, where they guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.

No experience or training is necessary to work with pre-K-12 students. As a writing, research or art coach, you'll engage and encourage their progress on a project.

This workshop needs your support at an elementary school in Mott Haven:

Program IC12MB-C

Three classes of 12th graders read Watched by Marina Budhos, a novel that examines what it means to grow up in the age of surveillance. The author will discuss the book’s themes and ideas, as well as her writing and revision process. With writing coaches’ support, students will revise and polish their first drafts of an essay inspired by the book.
