Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading. Through our innovative programs, accomplished authors lead workshops in high-needs classrooms, where they guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.
No experience or training is necessary to work with pre-K-12 students. As a writing, research or art coach, you'll engage and encourage their progress on a project.
This workshop needs your support at an elementary school in Crown Heights:

- Writing Coach
A kindergarten class read Stuck with the Blooz by Caron Levis, a picture book that helps children talk about emotions by depicting them as friendly monsters. Students will meet with the author to explore ways to handle their feelings, then choose an emotion to write about. Writing coaches will help small groups stay focused, provide supoort and encouragement, and answer their questions about spelling and grammar.
