Fun with the Purple Parrots!

Volunteer Role:

Volunteers are an integral part of East End House's School Age Program, and by doing so have an important part in addressing the achievement and opportunity gaps that low-income children face. Volunteers can participate in the School Age Program by helping kids with homework and/or assisting staff during enrichment activities. Volunteers play a dual role of providing youth with learning and enriching experiences while also being a consistent, caring, and supportive adult in the child's life.

Homework Helpers volunteer are in the classrooms with students and group leaders during homework time. Homework helpers assist students in their academic work, read with them to increase literacy, and create bonds with students through which they model good behavior and serve as mentors.

Enrichment volunteers participate and assist during enrichment time. They facilitate group leaders in providing engaging learning activities to youth. Volunteers will help pass out materials, assist youth that need extra attention and explanations, and will ask thought-provoking questions to kids to make them think about the activity. In the past enrichment activities/clubs have included STEM learning, arts and crafts, sports league, team-building games, and more!

Mission Statement

East End House is a not-for-profit, multi-service community center and social service agency with an on-going commitment to a diverse population, providing programs and services to strengthen family and community. East End House is the center of community life, a safe haven welcoming, linking, and collaborating with individuals of all ages, their families, businesses, and community institutions to create innovative programs in pursuit of excellence on a sound fiscal basis.

Description

Originally established in 1875, East End House is one of Greater Boston's earliest settlement houses and community centers. One hundred and twenty-nine years ago, it was a vital resource for struggling or newly immigrated individuals and families. Today it is a dynamic, multi-service community center, focused on improving self-sufficiency, providing emergency aid, and making referrals to other agencies when necessary. Consistent throughout its history is this agency's dedication to providing essential services by responding to current community needs with programs, classes, informational resources, and activities. Well-baby clinics at the turn of the century, New Deal Programs during the Great Depression, multilingual energy audits for lower-income families in the seventies, a new facility completed in 1993 - East End House has evolved with its community, ever-mindful of the development and self-determination of those it serves.
