Volunteer classroom instructor needed to begin as soon as possible at our Albany office. Hours are Monday and Wednesday, from 10 AM to 12 PM. Not flexible.

About us:

Literacy New York Greater Capital Region is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing confidential instruction by trained staff and volunteers to individuals who wish to improve their reading, writing, math and/or English fluency skills.

Our free educational services include: basic literacy instruction in reading, writing and math; preparation for the HSE; ELL (English Language Learning) tutoring and conversation groups, tutoring and application assistance for the citizenship exam.

Our service area covers more than 3,500 square miles in Albany,Saratoga, Schenectady, Warren and Washington Counties.

Details of position:

We are looking for a classroom instructor to teach our low beginner level English as a Second Language class. Hours are Monday and Wednesday, from 10 AM to 12 PM, and not flexible, however, we would be willing to have two instructors each teaching one of the two days.

Our class has a maximum of 25 students, but is usually around 15-20.

We do not have a fixed curriculum, so you may create your own. Alternatively, we have many of lesson plans and materials already developed which you are free to use.

Requirements:

  • Must be a native English speaker
  • Teaching or tutoring experience is required, ESL preferred
  • Must be available until the end of June. You will have the option to continue teaching beyond this if you wish.
