Free to Run Board members must possess a passion for, and commitment to, improving the lives of women and girls affected by conflict through the power of sports, and fully stand behind the purpose and the mission of Free to Run.

Free to Run was established in 2014 with programmes in Afghanistan, and in 2015 with a refugee programme in Hong Kong. As a young organization, Free to Run relies heavily on volunteers, including its board members. Board Members are recruited to fill particular gaps in expertise on the board and are encouraged to take a leading role in particular areas of responsibility - in this case, financial policies and oversight.

The role of Treasurer carries particular importance in helping to build the public’s perception, trust, and assurance in Free to Run’s financial management.

Desired Qualifications

Financial literacy (ideally with non-profit accounting), attention to detail, timeliness in completing tasks, neat and accurate record keeping, and a willingness to ask questions.

Duties and Responsibilities

As a Board Member

  • Regularly attends and actively participates in quarterly board meetings and any other meetings, as required
  • Maintains knowledge of Free to Run and personally commits to its goals and objectives
  • Gets to know other board members and builds collegial working relationships
  • Makes an annual personal financial contribution of at least US$ 2,500 (through personal funds or through fundraising contributions) and contributes to general fundraising

As Treasurer

Bank Account Maintenance and Financial Transaction Oversight

  • Serves as financial officer of the organization
  • Manages relations with CitiBank
  • Oversees thorough and accurate set of books and paying of bills, in particular

o Accepts and deposits monies received by Free to Run

o Pays all debts incurred by Free to Run in a timely manner

o Reconciles monthly bank statements or assists the President in doing so

o Works closely with and coordinates work of Certified Public Accountant

  • Assists the President to ensure that monthly expenses of Free to Run are within budget parameters
  • Researches available opportunities for creating cost economies for Free to Run from time-to-time

Reporting and Filing

  • Prepares, in collaboration with the President, appropriate financial reports for the board’s review on a timely basis
  • Takes responsibility for the filing of Form 990s


  • Provides direction to the President in preparing the annual budget and presenting the budget to the board for approval

Financial Policies

  • Establishes and maintains the integrity of Free to Run’s financial controls and reporting systems, and compliance of financial information with appropriate accounting principles
  • Ensures that Free to Run has systems in place to effectively monitor and manage the principal financial risks related to the operation of Free to Run
  • In coordination with the President, establishes and monitors processes and systems designed to ensure compliance with all applicable laws by Free to Run, its officers and employees


  • Oversees the regular provision of donation receipts and maintains list of all donors
  • Coordinates with the communication teams to ensure all major donors receive adequate attention


  • Any other duties as specified in the Bylaws (Article IV, Section 9)
