Djerassi Resident Artists Program is looking for more volunteers to assist with our ever-popular Public Sculpture Hikes. If you are interested in spending a morning or two hiking with us this coming year, please consider joining our Volunteer Docent Program.
Each year, Djerassi staff or docents lead 12 Public Sculpture Hikes for about 20 people each tour. We are looking to expand our current docent pool and are in need of more volunteers to serve as "sweepers" - persons who stay with the tail end of the group, making sure that no one gets left behind or wanders off. Ideally, we hope to assign two "sweepers" to each tour. This is perfect if you’d like to hike with a friend. Docents will also be counted on to stay with the group in case of the rare emergency. Interested volunteers are required to attend one of the Docent Training Days, which includes visiting the ranch, hiking, and getting to know each other. Docent Training is scheduled for Thursday, February 23 and Saturday, February 25.
What we’re looking for in our volunteers:
- Responsible and on time. Morning tours officially begin at 10am, so docents need to be at the Djerassi Resident Artist Program gate no later than 9:45a.m. We drive in to the ranch right at 10am and lock the gate after. Afternoon tours begin at 1p.m. and 4p.m., requiring docents to arrive no later thank 12:45p.m. and 3:45p.m. respectively.
- Physically able to hike for about 3-4 hours. The trail is roughly 2-5 miles long. We stop often to explain sculptures, but it’s quite hilly and at least half in the sun. But hey, that’s the effort for a beautiful view!
- Outgoing. It’s usually a talkative bunch of hikers, so friendliness is key.
- And of course enthusiasm for art and/or nature!
We have specific dates already selected for the hikes. For momre information, please visit: http://djerassi.org/docents.html
