We hold our walks througout the state in Portland, Lewiston, Bangor, Brunswick, Waterville, York Beach and Fort Kent in September and October. All of our walks have a planning committe who meet once a month to put together ideas and work on the details to make each walk a success. We'd welcome the opportunity for new volunteers on our walk committees to share ideas and help grow each walk. In addition, we need a 'Friday' volunteer for office work in preparation for our walks. And, lastly, we need volunteers to help during the day of the walks.

Mission Statement

To eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

Description

The Alzheimer's Association, Maine Chapter is a non-profit voluntary health organization that focuses on care, support and research for Alzheimer's disease.

The Maine Chapter is one of over 70 Alzheimer’s Association chapters serving communities across the United States. We provide services to an estimated 26,000 Mainers with Alzheimer’s as well as their caregivers; advocate for policy change and research funding; and advance toward prevention and a cure.

Right now Alzheimer's is the 6th leading cause of death in this country and the only disease (in the top ten causes of death) with no preventable measures or form of a cure. Approximately 147,000 Alzheimer's and dementia unpaid caregivers in Maine provide care valued at over $900 million a year our state. It should also be known that Maine is the oldest state in the US regarding median age at 43.5. That is more then 6 years older then any other state.

The most common cause of Alzheimer's is age and anyone with a brain could some day have this disease. Until we find a cure, our Nation and the state of Maine are facing a serious financial and medical crisis.

We are making strides towards our vision of a world without Alzheimer’s, but there is much work to do. Please join us and help us be an unstoppable force again this disease! Find the role that’s the best fit for you at alz.org/maine/volunteer
