This will take place at Johnson C Smith University Irwin Belk Complex on the days of Saturday April 22 nd, Sunday April 29 th, Sunday May 7 th, Sunday May 21, Saturday June 3rd. Saturday’s 8:00am-3:00pm, Sunday’s 12:00pm-6:30pm You can also volunteer half or full shifts

Brief Description of Program: The Youth Track & Field program is an annual youth sports offer from Mecklenburg County, serving over 350 participants 4-18 years old in 2015, competing in developmentally appropriate disciplines to promote a love of athletics in a recreational setting.

Brief Description of Volunteer Job (include work schedule if appropriate):

Starting Line: This will involve helping officials begin each race. Volunteers will assist in lining up athletes for the beginning of the race and getting the next group ready to go.

Hipping Tent: The location will be where the athletes receive their numbers for the race. Volunteers will help store athletes gear for pick up after the completion of the race. Volunteers will help seat the athletes in row to get ready to go to the starting line for competition.

Long-Jump: This will require helping officials with the long jump competition including taking measurements, raking the jump pits, and maintaining the jumping order.

Softball Throw: This will require helping the officials with the softball throw competition including taking measurements, retrieving the ball, and maintaining the throwing order.

Warm-Up areas: Helping athletes and monitoring area, maintaining the cleanliness of the area.

Clerking Tent: Assisting officials check in athletes and walking athletes to the hipping area.

Meet administrative assistant: The assistant will be assigned to the meet administrator in various tasks.

Ushers: Ushers will be required to assist athletes are at their designated event at the required time.

Hospitality Assistants: Volunteers will maintain and stock complementary refreshments for the athletes, officials, and volunteers, as well as maintain cleanliness of the hospitality areas located around the stadium. The ability to lift 30+lbs on and off trailers is required.

Event Set Up and tear down: Will require availability the day before event and/or from 1pm onwards day of event.

Award Area: Assist awarding participant ribbons based on results.

Timing/Finish Line Runner: Responsible for recording placement of athletes and informing award area volunteers to award ribbons.

Finish Line Volunteers: Responsible to record placement of athletes as they cross the finish line.

Announcer Assistant: Assists the announcer day of event.

Runners: Provides additional support on meet day.

Please list any tools or special clothing volunteers are requested to have: Comfortable clothing/shoes, lunch, sunscreen, hat, water bottle.

Mecklenburg County Park & Recreation's Mission: "Enhancing community wellness through recreation, open space, and natural resources." Our Vision is that "People who recreate in Mecklenburg County will have a system of parks, greenways, and open space located throughout the County that will provide more parkland per capita than the national average, will connect neighborhoods, satisfies public recreation needs, and will protect environmentally sensitive areas." Park & Recreation utilizes hundreds of Volunteers every year, supporting and supplementing the efforts of our staff in every area of our Department:
- Helping to care for and beautify 230 Parks and facilities, 55+ miles of Greenway and 21 Nature Preserves
- Working as registered and trained Youth Sport Coaches, Master Naturalists, Master Gardeners, SHIIP Counselors and Tutors/Mentors
- Assisting in Recreation Centers, Senior Centers and Nature Centers with programs, events and day-to-day operations
- Volunteering with Therapeutic & Inclusive Recreation Services to help provide recreation, sport and leisure programs that are accessible to everyone
