The role of a volunteer at Maimonides Infants and Children’s Hospital is to provide supplemental service to the staff and to fill the multiple needs of the child and family while in the hospital. Volunteers at Maimonides Infants & Children’s Hospital are assigned by the Department of Volunteer Services and while on duty are directly responsible to the Child Life Supervisor/Designee.

Child Life volunteers are prepared to function independently providing play, recreational, and supportive activities to children and their families on the Pediatric unit they are trained to. These activities assist in making patients feel safe and comfortable. Volunteers serve in the playroom as well as at the bedside when requested.

Specific Volunteer Opportunities Available:

  1. Skilled Group Leader -If you have a special skill you would like to share with our families like playing music, singing, arts & crafts, knitting, scrapbooking, storytelling, puppetry, etc. (2 hours a week for at Least 6 months)
  2. Volunteer in Play Room or Teen Room- Help provide materials at bedside and play or do arts and crafts with children and teens in the play areas.(4 hours a week for at least 6 months)

Description

The Child Life Program at Maimonides Infants and Children’s Hospital helps reduce the stress of illness, treatment and hospitalization for the family. The Child Life Program provides therapeutic, educational, and recreational activities to meet the unique emotional and developmental needs of hospitalized children and their families. Our Child Life Specialists and Creative Arts Therapy staff are trained in child development and working therapeutically to promote effective coping through play, preparation, education, and self-expression activities.
