Our vision is to help reduce the rapid rate of incarceration and recidivism for women. WHY HELP US? We are an organization whose motto is "Freedom from the Inside." We deeply value the empowerment of women and girls while inside prisons through literacy building, life skills training, skill building, and mentorship opportunities, so that when they are released they'll never return. Based on the facts, the need is urgent: * In the past 20 years, the incarceration rate of women has surged 800%, twice that of males. * The majority of women in prison are: * Mothers of underage children. * Need treatment for alcohol and drug addictions. * Are impacted by domestic violence * Literacy is a tool for freedom: The average reading level for incarcerated women and men is a 5th grade level. Prison records show that inmates have only a 16% chance of returning to prison if they receive literacy help, as opposed to 70% who receive no help.
