We are currently seeking history enthusiasts willing to join an efficient team creating a new interactive map of historic Ithaca. This opportunity involves transcribing 1910 census records and entering data. Potential volunteers are invited to take part in bi-monthly transcription gatherings called HistoryForge Data Entry Bee Parties and have two fun hours of work, with snacks.
More about HistoryForge:
HistoryForge is a new initiative that will result in a working prototype of a dynamic, interactive web-based interface to Ithaca and Tompkins County history using historic maps as portals to exploring local history.
Our plan is to work with the community to create an information base from historical maps and from United States and New York State censuses, Ithaca city directories and other sources. Users will include secondary school students, college students, community users, amateur historians and more advanced researchers.
The History Center has embarked on a mission to enter the 1910 census records for Ithaca into a searchable database, and incorporate this data into its programs and presentations.
The task is both exciting and huge. Volunteer opportunities for data entry abound. Feel the world of 1910 come to life in your mind as you enter the details of a block of residents.
Join our bimonthly HistoryForge Data Entry Bee Party to engage in creating a new Ithaca, NY interactive map, on Saturdays from 11am to 1pm! Please contact Community@TheHistoryCenter.net to find out more specific dates and times.
