Purpose: To enhance communications both written and oral between residents and staff
Requirements:
- Knowledgeable and proficient in oral and/or written communication in the designated language or dialect of Mandarin, Cantonese, Swahili, Spanish, and others as indication of need is present.
- Understanding of older adults possible cognitive and hearing limitations
- Convey meaning between people, accurately, impartially, faithfully and confidentially
Responsibilities:
- Sign in and out in the volunteer log every visit
- Assure all residents and clients interested in participating are accommodated and comfortable
- Educate the parties on the purpose and the process of the interaction
- Coordinate with site staff regarding any needs for materials or equipment
- Maintain the privacy of residents and do not disclose confidential information entrusted to you during the course of your work
- Discuss with staff any observations or recommendations with regard to this activity
- Notify your supervisor immediately if any injury, fall, change in condition or concern about any resident - assist with any incident report as necessary
Time Commitment:
- Maybe placed on a list of available resources when verbal, telephonic or written communication is in need of translation
- On-call or scheduled visits for ongoing needs in communities
