Purpose: To engage the client and residents in meaningful physical activities to enrich their lives and promote good health.

Requirements:

• Knowledgeable and proficient in working with groups
• Understanding of older adults possible cognitive and physical limitations
• Knowledge and understanding of techniques of fitness discipline (certification or evidence of training is required)
• Knowledge of adaptations needed when working with vulnerable and elderly populations
• Recognize situations that require staff intervening

Responsibilities:

• Sign in and out in the volunteer log every visit
• Assure all residents and clients interested in participating are accommodated and comfortable
• Adequate pre-planning
• Coordinate with site staff regarding activity needs
• Assist in acquiring "sign in" sheet for the activity
• Monitor the involvement of the participants and assure adequate hydration is available
• Assist those needing additional support and modifications of techniques
• Provide adequate rest periods
• Maintain the privacy of residents and do not disclose confidential information
• Clean area and return room to pre-activity configuration
• Discuss with staff any observations or recommendations with regard to this activity
• Notify your supervisor immediately if any injury, fall, change in condition or concern about any resident - assist with incident report as necessary

Time Commitment:

• This is best done on an on-going basis to provide consistent benefits (ie. 1-2 times per week)
• Six sessions minimum commitment
• May be a fitness leader sub to fill in during times of permanent leader’s illness or scheduling conflict
