Volunteer shift: 11:30am - 6pm


Intersection Superheroes!

  • Responsibilities: These volunteers will be in charge of welcoming participants to the event, answering questions, offering directions, and keeping an eye on adjacent driveways and parking deck entrances. In the event that a car exits onto the route, Intersection Superheroes will help direct cars to proceed slowly and safely to the nearest route exit and/or CMPD officer.

  • Shifts: 11:30am - 6pm

  • Age Restrictions: All volunteers must be ages 18+.

  • Supplies Provided: Volunteers will be provided with a route map, water, a reflective vest, and a volunteer t-shirt

  • Supplies to Bring: Please bring a folding chair, sunscreen, and an umbrella (if the weather looks threatening).

Evaluation Team

  • Responsibilities: Volunteers will assist with surveys and counts to help determine event attendance and evaluate participants’ experience. We’re looking for friendly, outgoing people who are excited to interact with participants and welcome them to the event. These volunteers will also be in charge of the "smile counters" signs. During the event staff will rotate/visit/check-in with each team.

  • Shifts: 11:30am- 6pm

  • Age Restrictions: Each volunteer group must have at least one adult age 18+.

  • Supplies Provided: Volunteers will be provided with a route map, water, clipboard, surveys, and a volunteer t-shirt

  • Supplies to Bring: Please bring a folding chair, sunscreen, and an umbrella (if the weather looks threatening)

Railroad Crossing Guards

  • Responsibilities: These volunteers will "guard" the Railroad Crossings. The primary job for these volunteers will be to warn cyclists to be careful crossing the tracks. Volunteers will use cones and chalk to encourage cyclists to cross the tracks at a 90 degree angle so their tires don’t fall in. If a train approaches during the event, the volunteers will make sure that participants wait for the gate arms to life before they cross the tracks.

  • Shifts: 11:30am - 6pm

  • Age Restrictions: Each volunteer group must have at least one adult age 18+.

  • Supplies Provided: Volunteers will be provided with a route map, water, reflective vests, chalk, traffic cones, signs, and a volunteer t-shirt.

    Supplies to Bring: Please bring a folding chair, sunscreen, and an umbrella (if the weather looks threatening).

Activity Zone Volunteers

  • Responsibilities: These volunteers will be in charge of assisting each Zone Captain. Duties may include assisting with bicycle rentals/valet, giving out water, guiding activity hosts and food trucks to the correct location, greeting participants, answering questions about the route/event, distributing supplies, etc. It will be the responsibility of the staff member assigned as the Zone Captain to deploy and direct their volunteers as needed.

  • Shifts: 11:30am - 6pm

  • Age Restrictions: Each volunteer group must have at least one adult age 18+.

  • Supplies Provided: Volunteers will be provided with a route map, water, and a volunteer t-shirt.

  • Supplies to Bring: Please bring sunscreen and an umbrella (if the weather looks threatening).

  • Zones:Arts & Science Zone, Green Zone, Wellness Zone, Family Zone

To assist Mecklenburg County Park & Recreation Department staff in providing services needed to offer quality recreation leisure services to the community by: - Supporting direct services provided to the public by salaried department staff. - Supplementing internal support service functions, including maintenance, clerical, administrative and similar tasks. 2. To provide the residents of Mecklenburg County opportunities for community involvement and to increase their awareness of the Department's responsibilities, facilities and services.

Description

Mecklenburg County Park & Recreation's Mission: "Enhancing community wellness through recreation, open space, and natural resources." Our Vision is that "People who recreate in Mecklenburg County will have a system of parks, greenways, and open space located throughout the County that will provide more parkland per capita than the national average, will connect neighborhoods, satisfies public recreation needs, and will protect environmentally sensitive areas." Park & Recreation utilizes hundreds of Volunteers every year, supporting and supplementing the efforts of our staff in every area of our Department:
- Helping to care for and beautify 230 Parks and facilities, 55+ miles of Greenway and 21 Nature Preserves
- Working as registered and trained Youth Sport Coaches, Master Naturalists, Master Gardeners, SHIIP Counselors and Tutors/Mentors
- Assisting in Recreation Centers, Senior Centers and Nature Centers with programs, events and day-to-day operations
- Volunteering with Therapeutic & Inclusive Recreation Services to help provide recreation, sport and leisure programs that are accessible to everyone
