VOLUNTEERING AT ORCHARD: AFRICA

Here at Orchard, we're always looking for talented, faithful and passionate volunteers who are ready to change the world and are looking for a hands-on experience. We work hard to maintain a positive, fun, and uplifting culture where creativity, personality and individual growth are more than encouraged, they’re expected. In exchange for your hard work you will get to showcase your talents to a global audience while being a meaningful contributor in the fight to restore hope to those afflicted by poverty & injustice.

WHO YOU ARE:

  • You’re someone that wants to change the world and believes that the local church is the absolute best platform from which to do it. You love people and the church.

  • You’re a glass half-full person, who sees opportunity where others may see a challenge.

  • You’re someone with a passion to design - it’s more than a casual hobby, this is what you love to do and you’re really good at it.

  • You design beyond the now - embracing trends without sacrificing longevity.

  • You’re a mobile first designer that believes website should be as beautiful as they are functional.

  • You’re someone that’s not only driven, but able to drive your own boat.

THE PROJECT:

We have a high priority need to migrate our website onto a CMS that will allow internal staff (who have little to no coding ability) to publish new content, update existing content, and test new messaging. In the migration process we want to entirely rethink our user experience and messaging such that the new site is simple, clear, and optimized for conversions. And while a good desktop experience matters, we want a site designed specifically for mobile, not a desktop site optimized for it.

SKILLS:

  • You understand when less is more and clarity trumps quantity.

  • You have experience & expertise in designing and building themes for either Wordpress, Squarespace, or equivalent.

  • You have conquered HTML, CSS & JavaScript, and always write clean code.

  • You have working knowledge in using APIs and embedded forms.

  • You have an ability to guide non-techies through decision making processes when needed.

COMMITMENT

You’ll start in mid February and commit to have the project done in less than 3 months (contingencies and dependencies will of course be accommodated). This position can work remote, but there’s a big upside to being able to have work sessions & meetings at our office in Chandler.

COMPENSATION

This is an unpaid volunteer opportunity - but is an exceptional chance to make a major contribution at an international non-profit with an ambitious mission. If you’re still in school, we will gladly work with your institution to give you academic credit for your experience.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to develop and equip the local church to be the response to poverty and injustice. The church is our platform, programs are our tools and hope in Christ is our message.

Description

Orchard: Africa exists to empower both the church in Southern Africa as well as the Western church to find sustainable and Christ-centered solutions to the poverty and injustice and their outworking in Southern African communities.

We want to see vulnerable communities implement projects that grow from meeting the daily needs of survival to village-led sustainable projects. We want to see churches becoming innovative and inventive in their ability to meet real needs. It is our intention that equipped church pastors and leaders will exceed the expectations of the training that we can provide - no longer needing us for their survival. We can then start the cycle over in other vulnerable communities.

Our goal is to empower pastors and village leaders with the skills to provide physical, emotional and spiritual care to the vulnerable in their own communities. Empowered and equipped pastors who feel that they can provide help - not only to their own congregation but to their communities at large. Our role is to provide these leaders with the tools; their role is to actively lead their communities in sustainable projects that restore hope.
