ORGANIZATION: Austin Achieve Public Schools

TIME FRAME:
Once or twice a week for 2 hours; minimum 6-week commitment

PURPOSE:
Achieve Mentors will serve as positive and encouraging role models as they support scholars in setting, working toward, and reaching their academic goals.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:

  • Working with the classroom teacher to identify activities and tasks for the scholar and mentor to work on

  • Identifying and setting academic goals with scholars

  • Reinforcing academic content scholars are learning in class

  • Assisting scholars with assignments and academic skill development

  • Checking in with scholars and the status of their goals

RESULTS:
Scholars will make improvements in the classroom based on their interactions with their mentors. Examples include reaching an academic goal, improving their GPA, and/or mastering an academic concept.

QUALIFICATIONS:
The position requires a positive and patient demeanor and a desire to work with children. Some understanding of middle-school or high-school curriculum is desired, but not required. A background check will be conducted when the volunteer visits for the first time.

SUPERVISION:
Achieve Mentors will support scholars in the academic classroom and be supervised by the teacher of the class. Mentors will report to the front office for check-in upon arrival at Austin Achieve.

BENEFITS:
By working with scholars on a consistent basis, Achieve Mentors will watch scholars grow in their learning and support them in reaching their academic goals. Mentors will see the direct impact of their work. Each Mentor’s volunteer service will help the teacher of the class by providing scholars with individualized instruction and attention.
