AmeriCorps is looking for a Refugee Education Assistant at Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas to successfully promote and support the mission of Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas as guided by the Catholic Social Teachings by providing education for refugees and immigrants- Citizenship Education and Refugee School Impact. The Citizenship Education Program offers two levels of Civics and Literacy classes, as well as an Interview Preparation course to refugees in the Kansas City Area who are eligible to apply for the Naturalization process. The center is located at CCNEK Central Office in Wyandotte County (Kansas City, KS). The purpose of the Citizenship Education Program is to enable refugees and immigrants to easily access Civics and Literacy instruction relevant to the Naturalization process and Citizenship Interview test. The focus of this role will primarily be assisting the Citizenship Program Teacher & Manager in teaching Civics & Literacy classes, taking attendance and student record-keeping, organizing volunteer tutors, and providing general classroom and program support.

Refugee School Impact (RSI) is a new program that starts in January of 2017. The goal of RSI is orienting newly arrived refugee students and parents to the public school system, enrolling students in school, managing volunteers and facilitating orientations for refugee parents.

Both roles involve general support to staff members as well as working directly with refugees and immigrants.

COMMITMENT:

Ability to commit to 1,700 hours over a one-year commitment

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist Citizenship Teacher with planning, preparing and facilitating daily classes, lesson plans and activities
  • Assist Citizenship Program staff with assessment testing, scoring and data entry
  • Coordinate volunteer schedules and attendance, ensuring all volunteers are on boarded, oriented and volunteer hours are collected and submitted
  • Act as a tutor in one-on-on and small group civics and literacy lessons during class times
  • Assist Citizenship Program staff with collecting and filing student work, assessing work and data entry
  • Receive training to administer and score standardized assessments of students
  • Assist in enrollment procedures and maintenance of student files and reporting documents for grant compliance
  • Provide general administrative assistance to Citizenship Program staff
  • Facilitate orientations to the school system for refugee parents and children, schedule interpreters and complete time sheets
  • Partner with local school district to ensure orientation information is relevant
  • Assist parents in enrolling students in public schools and eventually train and oversee volunteers to accomplish this goal

This position offers a stipend.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Fluency in English
  • 18 years old and older
  • Experience working with diverse backgrounds and families experiencing poverty, preferred
  • Experience in education with diverse populations, preferred
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational skills, ability to multitask and attention to detail
  • Patience and motivation to work with adult learners with limited English proficiency
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office and related programs
  • Punctual and reliable
