MathCounts is a math competition for middle-school students sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE). Its intent is to broaden the math horizons of students & encourage them to consider technical fields such as engineering. One doesn't have to be an engineer, however, to volunteer. The Muscle Shoals chapter MathCounts competition is held each February (usually during National Engineers Week) on the University of North Alabama (UNA) campus in Florence, AL. Help is desired in proctoring & scoring the exams on the day of the competition. Middle-school math teachers (coaches) may also be able to use volunteers who are willing to work with students on the team in extracurricular settings (math club, afternoon study sessions) during weeks prior to the contest date.
