Castle in the Clouds overlooking beautiful Lake Winnipesauke

Volunteer Interpreters are a critical part of the Castle in the Clouds museum team. Along with museum staff, they are the face of the historic Lucknow Estate and its ambassadors to the public. Interpreters act as an information resource for visitors on self-guided tours and are expected and encouraged to communicate with visitors and share their knowledge of the Lucknow Estate. Interpreters answer visitor questions, orient them with the layout of the house, and ensure that they have a safe, enjoyable, and rewarding experience. Interpreters also provide an important service in keeping the house museum and its collections secure while open to the public.

Mission Statement

To preserve and interpret the buildings and landscape of the Castle in the Clouds, welcoming the public to appreciate its history and beauty and developing programs that will make the Castle in the Clouds an important cultural resource. Castle in the Clouds’ community goal is for state and local residents to feel that it is "their" Castle, visiting often with a sense of pride and ownership.

Description

Castle in the Clouds is a grand mountain top estate built by Thomas and Olive Plant in 1914. They chose the Ossipee Mountains for their home because of its incredible beauty and view of Lake Winnipesaukee. The Estate opened to the public in 1959 and became a popular tourist attraction. In 2006, Castle in the Clouds became a non profit organization focusing on the preservation and restoration of the house and grounds.

Today we operate to share this incredible site with our many visitors. Tom and Olive Plants' home is open as a museum of both their lives and the arts and crafts architectural style. The house sits on top of a mountain surrounded by 5,380 acres of beautiful grounds that contain a pond, water falls, and over 30 miles of hiking trails. The Carriage House contains an exhibit gallery and a restaurant.

Our public programming ties all the aspects of the estate together so that people can come and enjoy all that Castle in the Clouds has to offer.

As you can imagine, many hands are needed to successfully run such a large organization!
