About

Advocacy relies on local stakeholders to help facilitate successful, game-changing advocacy for green building in Iowa. USGBC is a champion for green building and advocacy plays an important role in who we are and what we do. The USGBC Iowa Green Building Advocates Working Group supports staff with advocacy in Wisconsin by helping in the following ways, but not limited to: devising language around issues, speaking on behalf of each person’s company in support of issues, asking contacts to speak about issues, writing media articles in support of issues, and communicating with contacts directly about an issue.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Green Building Advocates Working Group with issues and policies that arise throughout the year. Tasks can include:
    • Assist with the creation of a resource page
    • Aid with scheduling meetings with state/local leaders
    • Aid with devising language around issues
    • Speak on behalf of your company/organization in support of issues
    • Ask contacts to speak publicly about issues
    • Write media articles in support of issues
    • Attend USGBC Advocacy related programs
    • Communicate with contacts directly about an issue
    • Have a welcoming, positive attitude while performing tasks in support of the initiative.
    • Attend all required meetings.
    • Be flexible. Despite planning and assignments, unexpected issues will occur throughout the year that need our attention. Staff will request assistance as necessary.
    • If a new volunteer, attend an orientation session; and complete and return required paperwork before the start of the position.

Qualifications

  • Strong reliability, attention to detail, and communication skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage others to meet group deadlines.
  • Comfortable engaging with new people with diversified backgrounds.
  • Ability to travel to, as necessary, to attend meetings and the event.
  • Must have a phone or computer with internet to join required online meetings.
  • Ability to multi-task and take on last minute tasks.
  • Ability to work as a team.

Time Commitment

This working group runs from January 1 st to January 1 st each year. The group has a set monthly online meeting time and work associated with the Green Building Advocate role can shift monthly from zero to eight hours depending on active issues and programming.


Note: Staff will ask for certain types of support depending on the issue(s) and strategies. Green Building Advocates will never be asked to complete a task outside a comfort zone, or speak on behalf of a company or organization without full permission.
