Position Title: "High School Application and Homework Coach" xh(Achievement Coach - Freshman Academy)

Organization overview: Higher Achievement believes talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not - aiming to close the opportunity gap during the pivotal middle school years. By leveraging the power of communities, Higher Achievement's proven model provides a rigorous year-round learning environment, caring role models, and a culture of high expectations, resulting in college-bound scholars with the character, confidence, and skills to succeed. Higher Achievement strives to successfully transition scholars to the best-fitting high school or program, while receiving continued support from staff and mentors.

Position overview: Higher Achievement scholars become "alumni" once they enter high school. 9 th grade alumni who attend comprehensive high schools can apply for 10 th grade acceptance into 3 specialty high schools. This position will give the Bonner Scholar hands on experience working to develop and run a rigorous study hall for these 9 th grade alumni and guide them through the process of completing and submitting applications. Over the next three and a half years, this position will work with the Manager of Scholar Services to strengthen and grow Higher Achievement’s high school transition and follow-through.

Duties include:

- Research Richmond and Henrico's unique high school landscape

- Develop timeline, curriculum, and study hall materials to aid the applications process

- Run weekly evening study hall with alumni

- Track and manage specialty school application progress

This is an excellent opportunity for a highly organized and motivated individual to develop skills in nonprofit work and ultimately learn about the impact Higher Achievement makes on closing the achievement gap for under resourced students and ultimately breaking the cycle of poverty. Well suited candidates should have an interest in education and working with youth.

Position Qualifications:

- A great attitude

- Ability to listen and be fully present with a young person

- Willingness to invest time and energy in teaching and mentoring adolescents

- Ability to respect boundaries while creating a relationship with your scholars around clearly defined goals

- Being a caring, concerned advocate for the needs and potential of a young person

- Ability to offer acknowledgement for hard work, while also able to address inappropriate behavior

- Punctuality

- Willingness to accept the responsibility of being a role model

- Ability to work independently and take initiative

- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills

- Highly organized with strong research skills and attention to detail

- Desire to continuously learn and confidence asking questions

- Ability to thrive in an environment that is characterized by growth, diversity and constant change

Preferred Days/Times of Work: Night availability twice a week to run 1 hour study hall, 4-6 hours for planning

Minimum Number of Hours Per Week: 6 - 8 hours

Total Number of Placements Available: 2
