Acorn Woodpecker
Catch a glimpse of an Acorn Woodpecker at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center!

If you like being out in nature and are able to bend, kneel, sit on the ground, and pull weeds like milk thistle and other non-native plants, this might be just right for you.

The Effie Yeaw Nature Center includes a woodland with diverse native plants and an array of non-native plants trying to invade and take over the preserve. The work is seasonal, of course. Right now we are mostly trying to remove milk thistle and bull thistle.

The work is mostly solo unless you volunteer with a friend. After your safety training and orientation, you may come in for a shift as short as an hour or up to six hours if you like, anytime between 9:00 and 4:00 Monday through Friday.

You must be heads-up aware enough to watch for rattlesnakes, ticks, and poison oak, and to be able to respond appropriately if you see them or come into contact with poison oak.
