Dry Dock Crew

Come out and learn the skills of a WWII merchant seaman while helping preserve a historic vessel. A deck volunteer will work on steel preservation, operate winches and booms, and various other maintenance & logistical tasks that keep the SS Jeremiah O'Brien a premier museum and artifact from an important era in American history.

No experience is required, but basic seamanship skills are helpful. Deck department volunteers that hold a MMC licence or credential as a master, mate or seaman are always needed. Our crew is composed of people from all levels of experience and have a willingness to pass along their knowledge and skills. We are a tightly nit small community of volunteers.

The Jeremiah O'Brien is an fully functional, living museum that sails. As a tribute to both those that served in World War II and specifically the Merchant Mariners who risked it all to deliver cargo to Normandy for the D Day invasion.

Deck department volunteer that hold a MMC licence or credential as a master, mate or seaman are always needed.

Mission Statement

The mission of the National Liberty Ship Memorial is to restore, promote and operate the LIBERTY Ship SS Jeremiah O'Brien as a living museum. The goal of this mission is to preserve, for present and future generations, the story of the patriotic and brave men and women who built, sailed and defended the 2,751 American-built World War II ships known as "Liberties".

Description

The S.S. Jeremiah O'Brien is one of only two surviving operational Liberty ships of 2710 ships of this class that were built. Liberty ships, along with similar Canadian and British ships, were the mainstay of the Allied logistic effort during W.W.II. Without the military and civilian cargos delivered by these ships, victory would not have been achieved. A national treasure, the O'Brien serves as a living memorial to the men and women who built, supplied, and sailed Liberty ships.
