6th Grade Volunteer Assistant Instructor
Ocean Science Explorers Program
Ocean Discovery Institute is an award-winning science education organization that works with San Diego’s most underserved elementary, middle, and high school students to promote science and environmental stewardship.
Ocean Science Explorers (OSE) is a school and field-based educational initiative that provides early and continued exposure to ocean science. Students and teachers participate in Ocean Science Explorers from the third through sixth grades.
Position Overview:
- Assist with hands-on science lessons for underserved youth
- Assist with outdoor field experiences at the Birch Aquarium and Torrey Pines
- Lessons focused on Earth Science (geology, climate change, renewable energy)
Position Commitment:
- One weekday morning per week (approx. 5 hours) mid-January through June
- Attend training:
- Thursday, January 12 th, 4:00-7:00pm
- Second training TBD

Description
The programs of Ocean Discovery Institute offer intensive, hands-on learning opportunities for disadvantaged children and youth. Programs are offered throughout the year. The programs employ three basic strategies: classroom and field-based programming in partnership with Title 1 schools, intensive after-school and summer programs, community-based habitat restoration events.
