Heshima Kenya is hosting its annual Fashion Challenge, a Project Runway-style fundraiser for young unaccompanied and orphaned refugee girls in East Africa. Local Chicago designers submit a piece using fabric created by the young artisans in our programs, which are showcased in a runway competition before a panel of expert judges.

We're looking for an awesome group of volunteers for this high-energy event on April 27, 2017. Shift times and duties vary. To sign up and learn more, please go to our Google form:

About Heshima Kenya

Location:

Mission Statement

Heshima Kenya specializes in identifying and protecting unaccompanied and separated refugee children and youth, especially girls, young women and their children living in Nairobi, Kenya. Our shelter, education and community outreach services, coupled with local resources and the refugee community, empower this population to live healthy lives. By providing resources for long-term support, these girls and young women become catalysts for strengthening networks creating sustainable change within the local and global communities.

Description

Heshima Kenya, a nonprofit organization operating in Nairobi, Kenya, is the first organization in Kenya devoted to protecting unaccompanied and separated refugee children and youth, with a special focus in supporting women and girls ages 13 to 23 years old from Somalia, Ethiopia, DR Congo, Sudan, Rwanda, and Burundi.

We provide shelter, education, vocational training, case management support, and advocacy to participants and their children who have experienced the detrimental effects of war, the loss of their families, and, in many cases, kidnapping, rape, trafficking, unlawful detainment, and torture.

We also mobilize members of the refugee community through educational outreach. At the core of Heshima Kenya’s model is the creation of a social network that empowers girls and young women to strive for economic self-sufficiency and become community leaders in their own right.
