This is an unpaid internship.

Safe Space, Inc. is dedicated to providing a safe, accepting, and supportive environment to combat social stigmas, bullying, and other challenges faced by LGBT+ youth.

Our Policy and Communications Program builds public education campaigns that advance equity for LGBT+ youth, builds parent capacity to create a vibrant media presence, and engages in statewide advocacy efforts.

According to the latest study released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), LGBTQ+ youth are at increased risk for suicidal thoughts and behaviors, suicide attempts, and suicide. In addition, LGBTQ+ youth were more likely than heterosexual youth to report high levels of bullying and substance abuse. The goal of Safe Space is to protect our youth from these perils by providing a positive environment and welcoming staff that embrace, uplift, and encourage them. Our ultimate goal is to ensure 14-18 year olds in the Northern Virginia area have access to an organization and activities that promote equality.

Safe Space, Inc. is seeking a Programs Intern to assist with all facets of our programs. Safe Space, Inc. is looking for a creative individual who is committed to our mission. The Program Intern will:

  • Conduct research on statistics in the LGBT community (preferably targeting the 14-18 range) that can be used for social media posts
  • Keep a calendar of upcoming awareness months that can be used for social media campaigns
  • Identify events in the Northern Virginia area that the Safe Space team can attend
  • Contribute to the Safe Space blog as needed to keep content relevant and consistent
  • Be aware of current trends and topics in the LGBT community
  • Assist with organizing & outreach efforts to recruit/retain Safe Space, Inc. Northern Virginia participants;
  • Help design & coordinate production of e-newsletters and outreach materials;
  • Develop, coordinate and attend events, educational workshops and outreach events;
  • Collect, organize and enter participant data into database;
  • Assist with Safe Space, Inc. Program staff with other special projects as needed.
