The Adult Literacy Program at Abington Free Library is always looking for enthusiastic literacy tutors to provide weekly one-on-one tutoring at the library. We have openings for tutors in the following areas - English for English language learners, GED/HiSet subject areas, basic math, reading, and writing. All instruction is in English. Tutors determine their schedules and what subjects they teach. We always have a waiting list of eager students looking to improve their English reading, writing and speaking skills. No prior experience is required.

Interested tutors should contact us for more information. We hold our required New Tutor Training sessions three times a year - spring, summer, and fall. This will be a highly rewarding experience for the right person!

Mission Statement

The mission of the Adult Literacy Program at the Abington Free Library is to help area adults improve their English reading, writing, speaking and listening skills so they can be productive and participating members of society. The program is free of charge; priority is given to low-income adults who need to improve their skills in order to increase their job prospects and support their families. The Adult Literacy Program at the Abington Free Library is a non-profit organization formed in 1984. Last year, 109 volunteer tutors, working in the program, served 163 adults from our service area: Montgomery, Bucks and Philadelphia counties. Since its inception, our program has directly helped over 4,000 adult learners.

Description

Our volunteer tutors provide one-on-one literacy help to our students. Tutors generally meet with their student once a week at the Abington Free Library. We have both ESL (English as a Second Language) and English language speakers who want to improve their English reading, writing and speaking. We ask our volunteer tutors to attend a New Tutor Training seminar and make a minimum six-month commitment to their student.

* Please be sure TRAVEL TIME to the library every week is doable for you before committing to volunteer. Also, please provide your TELEPHONE NUMBER so that we may speak with you directly.
