Reading skills are a key indicator of future success. Yet more than 50% of the students in the Alum Rock Union Elementary School District are not reading proficiently.
You can help!
Become a reading mentor for two K-1st grade students at Dorsa or San Antonio Elementary Schools in San Jose, CA. Your commitment of just 1 hour per week will:
- Improve their reading readiness
- Increase their confidence and self-esteem
- Instill in them a love of learning
Requirements:
- Complete and submit a YWCR Volunteer Application
- Commit to mentor 12 or more reading sessions per semester
- Provide a negative Tuberculosis (TB) Test
- Pass LiveScan fingerprinting and background investigation through Santa Clara County’s Sherriff’s Department
- Attend a scheduled reading mentor orientation session

Grail Family Services fosters learning and the empowering of low-income families in San Jose's multicultural neighborhoods through the delivery of programs that educate, develop leadership skills, and build a sense of community.
Description
The organization was incorporated in 1995 to develop affordable housing, a child development center, and a community resource center.
Since 2000, the agency has focused its efforts on providing family support programs with a focus on family literacy, adult education, and the empowerment of community residents. GFS is recognized as an incubator of high quality, community-focused, results-oriented programs that respond to residents' needs. To strengthen our impact, GFS partners with over 20 organizations to implement programs, refer volunteers, and conduct evaluation.
