About Us
Baltimore City Community College Refugee Youth Project (RYP) provides after-school, summer school, mentoring, and community art programming to refugee students grades K-12. Through these programs, youth receive tutoring, mentoring, language support, social support, and a chance to meet others who are overcoming similar circumstances. Each year, RYP serves over 300 students with the assistance of nearly 250 volunteers.
In 2012, RYP developed a small social enterprise called ArtWorks. ArtWorks’ mission includes the following three parts: (1) to further educational and professional opportunities for RYP students, (2) to supplement after-school programming costs, and (3) to use handmade art as a platform for sharing information about refugees in the Baltimore area to a broader community. This unique social enterprise melds art, social justice, entrepreneurship, to teach high school students the value of creating personal artwork along with sharing their cultures and techniques. Some current products include African necklaces, prayer flags, scented candles, stationary, and wood-burned spoons. In efforts to expand this program, ArtWorks is launching an entrepreneurial program where students will work in teams to create a prototype for a future ArtWorks product.
