About

Morrison Natural History Museum is seeking volunteers who would like to assist with the cleaning and teaching about fossils and helping with general daily operations. If you are interested in adding variety to your volunteer-diet, this job is for you!

Assist with exhibit interpretation:

Museum Assistants will lead interpretive programs focused on regional paleontology and geology. In this role as a Paleontology Interpreters, volunteers will find themselves as the primary educator in the paleontology exhibition which is a focused on local dinosaur finds.

Volunteers provide schoolchildren and unscheduled visitors with informal science education (unstructured, conversational tours) of the indoor exhibits and outdoor grounds. Included with these programs are hands-on activities such as a fossil preparation demonstration and petting a live snake.

Experience is desired, but not required. Spanish/English speakers are encouraged to apply.

Mandatory training/orientation is provided, free of charge. A minimum six-month commitment is recommended, with a monthly requirement of at least 8 hours of service.

Morrison Museum is a small institution with irregular visitor flow, volunteers are asked to assist in a secondary role, providing visitors with information, checking visitors in, monitoring the gift shop, and other duties as assigned.

Assist with fossil preparation:

Museum Assistants will be trained to prepare fossils for research and display. Museum staff is currently preparing local fossils from hard sandstone matrix, including Stegosaurus, Apatosaurus, Allosaurus, turtles and other Late Jurassic animals.

Volunteers will be trained how to properly use manual, power and pneumatic hand tools as well as the use of chemicals for the consolidation of fossils. Volunteer also provide museum visitors with fossil preparation demonstrations.

Assist with general opeations:

  • Greet and orient visitors
  • Collect admission and payments for gift shop merchandise
  • Monitor and maintain the gift shop
  • Answer telephones and other light clerical work
  • Other duties as assigned

Due to the demand for this volunteer position, qualified applicants may be placed on a wait list until a vacancy occurs.
