Description Can you help our small nonprofit with your writing talent? The unPrison Project ( www.unprisonproject.org) works to raise awareness about the issues behind mass incarceration, and help reduce mass incarceration, especially of women and girls. We’re looking for an op-ed writer to help develop and draft opinion pieces and letters to editors related to: > Mass incarceration, especially of women; > Social justice issues; > Literacy; > Recovery and substance abuse as it relates to sentencing and incarceration; > Mental health issues as they relate to sentencing and incarceration. This opportunity is for a person to create content regularly to grow the footprint of our nonprofit by using press releases, op-eds, letters to editors, and and creative content.) You will collaborate with with the Executive Director and/or a board member to craft and pitch press releases, opinion pieces, and thought leadership essays. We do this writing work as part of our nonprofit in order to establish a sustainable, strategic approach to PR based on adding value to media outlets, not just asking for publication or placement. QUALITIES NEEDED: Skilled in creating and editing written content with the ability to respond to the fast-paced, rapidly changing news cycle. Your writing will not be political in nature but focus on human interest issues in response to timely new bytes. Ideal candidate will have experience in op-ed development Past experience in public relations, marketing and communications will help. WHY WRITE OPINION PIECES? Only about 20% of the op-eds that appear in the national media are written by women, and a very small percentage are written by people of color. Help us make some noise about women’s issues as they relate to incarceration, mental health, and substance abuse. Part of this opportunity includes connecting with influential media outlets and journalists to place stories. You will be provided with these contacts and outreach details. Please join us in raising awareness about the issues behind mass incarceration, and the urgent need to reduce mass incarceration, especially of women and girls.
