Join us as a volunteer board member at Community & Parents for Public Schools of Seattle. Are you excited about education? Understand the value of family engagement? CPPS assists immigrant and low-income parents to become engaged as volunteers and policy advocates in their childrens' schools, helping their students and their communities succeed. Our work is primarily in Southeast Seattle, but we expect to expand beyond that. We need Board volunteers who can commit to one 2-hour meeting per month in Southeast Seattle, plus at least one additional meeting per month as well as some work out of your home. Currently needed skills are marketing/communications, fundraising, event planning, web management, and accounting, but your excitement and willingness to help are your biggest asset! We usually meet at our office for board meetings, and at mutually agreeable locations/times for planning and collaborative work.

Mission Statement
CPPS Educates, Engages, & Mobilizes Parents for Equitable, Quality Schools Serving All Children. In our vision, families are nurtured as school partners (in programs like our Parent Volunteer Mentorship Program and Parent Leadership Training) to help create culturally responsive classrooms and the best possible outcomes for all students.
Description
- CPPS equips parents as education leaders, because with limited school hours, the education system alone is not sufficient to break cycles of poverty. To help families influence education, we start with adult learning - breaking down isolation that prevents engagement, targeting ESL and technology skills, and helping families build relationships to learn about education. Our Parent Volunteer Mentorship program helps parents like Anh and Estela, who began as quiet kindergarten parents, hesitant to speak English or become involved at school. Through Parent Volunteer Mentorship, they practiced their English, engaged with teachers and fellow parents from other backgrounds, and gained confidence in how to support students and volunteer in the classroom. Their presence at school has led to opportunities for their children and leadership roles for them. Help CPPS break cycles of poverty by building systemic family engagement in Seattle!
