Who? SWELL (Saving Water Everyday Living Life) at Western HS with the Y
What? A garden project becomes the apparatus of educating the community on water conservation practices and sustainability through the landscape - all developed and implemented by student advocates.
The garden project will also utilize school day classes like Culinary, BITA, 3D Design, and Life Sciences, as well as several environmental and service clubs that many of the participating students are a part of. All will be carried out during after school time through the Y’s Anaheim Achieves program.
Why? Landscapes in Southern California are among the highest water wasters due to the lack of knowledge of appropriate plants and techniques (sources can be produced upon request). This garden is to serve as a working, learning garden that highlights a variety of ways one could minimize their over-all water footprint in the landscape, and provide other learning, sustaining, and therapeutic practices a garden may serve.
