Volunteer Opportunities

Flying Squad (This committee operates Wednesday - Sunday)

The Flying Squad will have varied tasks which could include, but are not limited to, assisting with transition of players, gallery control, course evacuation, and spectator and cart traffic control, etc.

Gallery Marshals (This committee operates Wednesday - Sunday)

Serve as Goodwill Ambassadors of the tournament by providing information to spectators/patrons, etc. Gallery Marshals will be assigned to a specific hole/location on the course. They provide gallery control to ensure safety and ease of movement for players, caddies and officials by controlling noise and gallery activities, ball spotting, evacuation assistance and they also monitor and address cell phone/camera usage in and around areas that could potentially disrupt play. Gallery marshals are not required on Monday and Tuesday.

Hospitality (This committee operates Thursday - Sunday)

These volunteers assist committee officials with greeting/welcoming guests and checking credentials at private entrances to hospitality suites. Provide information and assistance to hospitality suite holders and assist the Marshals with noise control during tournament play.

Lasers/ShotLink (This committee operates Thursday - Sunday)

Operate laser measurement devices on fairways and greenside to provide on-course, real time data input to the PGA TOUR's ShotLink Scoring and Statistics System. ShotLink lasers are similar to survey equipment.

Committee Requirements: ShotLink volunteers MUST attend a mandatory training on Saturday prior to SHO and approximately 1 hour between 10 AM - 2 PM on Wednesday, of tournament week for a practice session. Volunteers MUST work a minimum of 2 full days and must be physically able to walk/stand/climb for long periods of time.

Practice Areas (This committee operates Monday - Sunday)

Volunteers will prepare and staff the practice range as well as the chipping and putting areas. In addition, volunteers will pick-up, clean and re-distribute the golf balls, place signs by participants and provide overall marshal services for the practice areas.

Roping (This committee operates Thursday, prior to SHO - Wednesday, of tournament week)

This is primarily a pre-tournament opportunity to assist committee officials with the installation of ropes, stakes & barricades which provide gallery control, player safety, etc.

Television (This committee operates Thursday - Sunday)

Assist television crews during on air coverage. Volunteers are needed to assist with scoring, spotting and or driving camera operators. Volunteers must work all 4 days and be able to walk all 18 holes.

Transitions (This committee operates Wednesday - Sunday)

Manage and direct player and spectator traffic in specific transitional areas.

Transportation (This committee operates Saturday prior to tournament - Sunday of tournament week)

Assist in transporting players, their families and VIP guests to and from hotel, golf course and airport. Volunteers must have a valid driver’s license and pass a background check.

Volunteer Hospitality (This committee operates Wednesday - Sunday)

This committee will be responsible for maintaining the volunteer tent and keeping the area clean and comfortable for all volunteers. They will assist the committee chairman in managing the snack distribution, keeping the coffee service stocked and ready each day and helping direct volunteers to their respective check in areas.

Thursday and Friday shifts are approximately 5+ hours for both morning and afternoon tee times.

Saturday and Sunday shifts are approximately 8 hours with one wave of tee times.

Actual start/end times will vary depending on assignment and/or tournament delays.

Since 1974 the Houston Golf Association (HGA) has generated more than $64 million dollars for local charity. When the Shell Oil Company became title sponsor in 1992, more than $60 million of that total was raised through the Shell Houston Open and put to work in the community through HGA’s charitable programs. Net proceeds from the Shell Houston Open support core charities that provide critical programs and resources to young people and their families.
